- Skin inflammation
Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-related inflammatory skin condition associated with red, raised patches with silvery scales on the skin which are often itchy and sore, and which may also cause skin cracking or bleeding, especially around joints.
TCM theory attributes Psoriasis and similar skin rashes or outbreaks to “excess of heat” or “excess of yang energy”, which is understood in TCM as a certain type of imbalance within the body leading, among others, to symptoms such as fever, flushed face, skin rashes, anxiety, digestive issues and various inflammatory conditions.
There are multiple factors which may contribute to this imbalance including environmental factors (such as hot weather, pollution), stress as well as diet. For example, some common foods and drugs are understood in TCM to cause or exacerbate the excess of heat. These include seafood, red and/or fatty meat (lamb, beef), certain fruits such as mango, tobacco, alcohol and “hot” spices including chilli, cumin, ginger, cinnamon or garlic. On the other hand some foods or herbs, in particular mint, watermelon or cucumbers are understood as having “cold” or “cooling” properties and to facilitate reduction of “heat” in the body.
Therefore, for best results whilst taking this remedy it is highly recommended to also consume plenty of “cold” foods, in particular mint or mint tea.
